Three Year Postdoctoral Fellowship: Women in Philanthropy

The Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership graduate program, School of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher to lead a new initiative on Women in Philanthropy. The project is funded by a woman philanthropist interested in advancing knowledge and the work of women in the philanthropic and charitable sector.
The Postdoctoral Researcher will develop and implement a research program on women in philanthropy including roles as donors, volunteers, activists, founders, investors, innovators, leaders and professionals. Community engagement and knowledge mobilization will be major components of the project to learn from and contribute to philanthropic practice in Canada and build this field of research. The Research Lead will be expected to collaborate with women philanthropists and sector leaders and convene Critical Conversations® to enable the project to champion a deeper understanding of women in philanthropy. The Lead will also be expected to produce academic and practice-oriented papers, reports, blogs and other forms of communication. Some teaching and professional development may be included. The work will be supported by a PhD candidate, Masters student and faculty member, working as a team. An interest in philanthropy/nonprofit/civil socieety studies and/or gender analysis and an ability to guide and supervise the use of a variety of methodological approaches are assets.
The position is full-time at an annual gross salary of $80,000 with the additional ability to opt into an extended health and dental benefit plan. The postdoc will be considered unionized and will be a member of PSAC Local 77000. Information on this bargaining unit can be found here: https://psac77000.ca/.
The position is renewable for three years, subject to annual review based on meeting milestones and indicators of impact. Ideally, the Researcher would remain in the leadership position for the full three years. Although the work can be hybrid, some time on the Carleton University campus is expected. The preferred start is as soon as possible in 2025 (to be negotiated).

PhD Candidate Research Position: Women in Philanthropy

The project is funded by a woman philanthropist interested in advancing knowledge and the work of women in the philanthropic and charitable sector.
The Research Associate will work with a team led by a Postdoctoral Fellow and faculty member to develop and carry out research on women in roles as donors, volunteers, activists, founders, investors, innovators, leaders and professionals in the philanthropic sector. Knowledge mobilization and community engagement will be major components of the project to learn from and contribute to philanthropic practice in Canada and build this field of research. The team will collaborate with women philanthropists and sector leaders and convene conversations to enable the project to champion a deeper understanding of women in philanthropy. The PhD candidate will be expected to contribute to academic and practice-oriented papers, reports, blogs and other forms of communication. An interest in philanthropy/nonprofit studies and/or gender analysis and an ability to apply a variety of methodological approaches are assets.
Expectations are for at least ten hours per week on the project, which may also form part of the candidate’s dissertation research. Annual funding of $30,000 is renewable for three years, subject to annual review based on meeting milestones and indicators of impact. Ideally, the candidate would remain in the position for three years. The expected start is summer 2025 (to be negotiated). The position is open to candidates in a PhD program in any relevant discipline, with preference to candidates enrolled at Carleton University.
