As academics few things are more important (or sometimes challenging) than communicating your work to others. While many of us may be familiar with more traditional academic publications, there are so many other avenues for communicating your work to the public that you may have never considered. This panel will focus on practical advice and training on how to communicate your work to the public through various media types.

Maddy Eisenberg - Consultant, Blackbird Strategies
Maddy Eisenberg is a natural communicator. A graduate of the Radio Broadcasting program at Algonquin College, Maddy is well known in Ottawa as the voice of traffic and weather on 580CFRA and Move100. Her experience in a newsroom means she knows what stories sell. Maddy is an advocate for mental health, leveraging social media to recount her own mental health journey and work for more accessible resources within our community.

Lisa Varano - Deputy Editor, The Conversation
Lisa Varano is the Deputy Editor of The Conversation Canada, based in Toronto. She previously held the role of Audience Development Editor. Prior to The Conversation, she worked at CTV News Toronto as a TV news writer. She has an MA in journalism from Western University and a BA in political science from McGill University.

Josslyn Johnstone - Communications & Media Relations Specialist, University of Toronto, Faculty of Arts & Science
Josslyn Johnstone (she/her) is a media relations and communications specialist at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts & Science. In her role, she works with researchers across the social sciences, humanities, and sciences to get their compelling stories in the hands of the right journalists at the right time, to ensure the right audiences hear them. Before joining U of T in 2021, Josslyn led media relations campaigns for exhibitions, research, and events at the Royal Ontario Museum, and worked with international journalists and talent as a press officer at the Toronto International Film Festival.
