Taking care of yourself in an uncaring institution

Professional Development Webinar 2020

Organizers: Student Concerns Subcommittee

Guest: Dr. Ariane Hanemaayer, visiting fellow at the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Cambridge, and an Assistant Professor at Brandon University

This webinar discusses some of the most difficult challenges for post-graduate students in higher education: imposture syndrome, self-advocacy, and mental health. The culture of academia has unique pressures and obstacles, and part of our professionalization requires discussion and development of strategies to navigate and cope in this environment. Drawing on anecdote and sometimes a little humour, Hanemaayer leads this interactive webinar by sharing some of her life-hacks for managing the stresses of our professional lives. Going forward, we hope this webinar starts conversations about how to cultivate a supportive culture of care during programs that are both challenging and rewarding.
