Candidate Nominations

The objective of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) is to promote the advancement of the discipline of Sociology in Canada and abroad and to expand the opportunities for sociological research, teaching, and learning in compliance with the highest ethical and academic standards. It seeks to increase public knowledge, interest and critical awareness of social structures, particularly in Canadian society, within a global system.

Our Association is governed by a team of dedicated individuals who have been elected to serve on our Subcommittees and Executive Committee. We have been fortunate to have a history of strong leadership that has helped the Association grow in membership, programs, resources, and support of the discipline. Now more than ever, can we appreciate the important responsibility elected officials have in ensuring the stability of our Association.

Members of the CSA are eligible to hold a position on the Executive Committee or Subcommittees. The contribution of time and expertise from volunteers assuming these leadership roles is key to the success of the CSA.

Any one (1) member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing may nominate another member of the Canadian Sociological Association in good standing for a vacant position on a Subcommittee or the Executive Committee by submitting the following information to the CSA Office no later than March 7, 2025.

  • Position for nomination
    • The list of positions is below and note that student members (Undergraduate, MA, or PhD) are only eligible for the Student Concerns Subcommittee positions at this time
  • First and last name, academic affiliation, and email address of person being nominated
    • The person must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association
  • First and last name, academic affiliation, and email address for each person submitting this nomination
    • A minimum of one (1) nominator who is not the nominee is required
    • Each nominator must be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association

The nominator(s) as well as the nominee must be copied on the email when submitting the nomination.

 1. President Elect

Member nominations for this position are subject to approval by the Executive Committee.

This position supports the President as required and will assume the position if the President is unable to continue in the role. Those assuming this position will serve one year as President Elect, one year as President, and a final year as Past President.

The President is the single most responsible person for promoting the vitality and smooth functioning of the association. A successful President needs to exercise leadership in coordinating the other members of the Executive Committee along with remaining in touch with the wishes of the membership.  Contact the CSA Office for additional information on this role.

The duties for the first year include;

  • Member of the Executive Committee
  • Chair of the Awards Committee
  • Member of the Administrative Committee
  • Member of the Conference Program Committee

2. Communications Officer

This position within the Executive Committee brings expertise in branding, communications, and media outreach to the Association. The duties include;

  • Advise on Association branding and communications (e.g. newsletter and website content)
  • Facilitate special public and media outreach
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on social media content
  • Work with Executive Director to moderate CSA member engagement platform HSS Commons (forum and blog sections)
  • Draft official statements in consultation with the Executive Committee

3. Equity Issues Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues of concern dealing with equity and injustice to the attention of the association and members
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with equity issues as relevant and with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate equity initiatives into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

4. Public Engagement and Professional Concerns Subcommittee Member(s)

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Collaborate with non-academic publics to promote public sociology
  • Support the work of public- and community-engaged sociologists
  • Engage in outreach with the membership about issues they face working or studying in the discipline of sociology and communicating these issues to the EC to help set priorities for the work of the CSA
  • Assign members to other Association committees, if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

5. Research Advisory Subcommittee Member

The mandate of this subcommittee includes;

  • Bring current and emerging issues of concern dealing with research and data to the attention of the association and members
  • Represent the Association on external committees dealing with research and data as relevant and with the approval of the Executive Committee
  • Incorporate research related initiatives into the regular business of the Association and annual conferences
  • Assign members to other Association committees (Awards, Conference Program, Nominations, etc) if deemed appropriate
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions

6. Student Concerns Subcommittee Member

Position open for 2025-2028 – Western Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba).  Learn more about this subcommittee

The mandate of the subcommittee includes;

  • Identify priorities with respect to issues affecting students
  • Advise on student funding programs and assist with adjudication
  • Stimulate and facilitate communication among students
  • Committee membership on Association initiatives supporting students
  • Membership on the Awards Committees
  • Knowledge sharing through virtual events, website resources, and Conference sessions
